Bunny Fucking Beckman

So, today’s a big day for me. Something I never thought I would actually see happen has happened. I mean, I always hoped, but when you are a writer, you learn to temper that hope with realism. You don’t want to get your spirit crushed by falling short, so you keep your expectations in check. You do it to protect your dreams from the harshness of reality.

For me, that dream was what many might call small. I wanted my book, Bunnypocalypse: Dead Reckoning, seen to the right there unless you’re on a phone, to be seen, recognized, and liked. By the mainstream, sure. That would be nice. Every writer wants that. For me, it was just a hope that it be acknowledged by readers. I don’t hold out hope of seeing it be a top ten bestseller or anything. I’ve said before, mid-list a happy place to be, so if it made it there, I’d consider it one of the greatest achievements of my life.

Today, that happened.

Okay, yes, it’s still really low in the Kindle store and general horror, but it’s in the top 100 on LGBTQ Horror, and that’s a hell of a thing, cause it had to fight past Anne Rice and Poppy Z. Bright to get there. Which it did. Bunny is rubbing elbows with the legends.

I have to thank Raistlin for helping it get out the door hard and loud. When he shared it hitting the market, that helped. I have reviews from his readers on Amazon. He gave it that push it needed, and I am deeply thankful. Never underestimate how much your true friends have your back, and help you, kids. It’s a real thing.

Nor would I even have it on Kindle without the hard work and dedication of my amazing friend and fellow author Joseph Hagen, who put it into Kindle format for me, cause I do not understand how that works, at all. I owe them both a massive debt of gratitude.

I also owe a giant middle finger to all the publishers that turned Bunny down because they felt she couldn’t achieve this. I was told that. There’s no market for this kind of gay character. It needs romance, and sex scenes. Nobody will buy it without that. Nobody will want it without that. She’s too violent, too angry. She needs to be softer, gentler, kinder. It reflects poorly on the community, and we can’t have that.

Funny, cause all the people in the LGBTQ community I shared this with loved it, and Bunny. Publishers don’t always know what their readers want. Take that to heart, my fellow writers. Stick to your guns. The payoff comes, and you get to laugh at them for being wrong. It doesn’t happen often, and there’s no glory with it, but you know.

You know you did the right thing for your book, and your character.

Am I being a bit petty here? Oh hell yes. Cause it wasn’t just publishers, editors, and agents that told me that, it was people. I got told by some people I needed to change things, fix things, to make this work. I got told all the ways I was going to fail if I didn’t, and I was stupid for not doing what they said.

Oh, hey, look at that. Guess I was right, and they were wrong. So, yeah, I’m being petty. I’ve earned it. I waded through mountains of shit for this. For this moment of vindication. To have readers show up and support this, and prove all the naysayers wrong.

Bunny is getting her due, and nothing could make me happier.

So what if it doesn’t stay there? It made it. So what if it never breaks into the mainstream? It got here.

Today, I showed the world what Bunny can do, and nobody can take that away.

Never give up on your dreams, guys. You will make it. Just look at Bunny fucking Beckman standing defiant where everyone said she could never be.

Fuck yes, I’m petty about that.

  1. Hey…HUCKO!! 😂😂😂 This is such awesome news man! Seriously…this entire post brought such a huge smile to my face….I can’t include a picture in this comment, but seriously I’m so filled with joy at this that I could not be more happy for you! You deserve this…so much! Man…you are saying low? I’m saying high…amongst all the thousands and thousands of books in the LGBTQ horror…you are in the 100! That’s not only an achievement: it’s a milestone! YOU did this man…be proud…I am proud of you man! Thanks for the shout out, but man it’s been my pleasure…!
Little sidenote…will you please stop writing such great books that I actually should be sleeping but am keeping my lights on just a little longer just to read a few more pages? I’m loving Wonderland man…the characters are so awesome! I’m almost halfway through and so far it’s been one heck of a ride! Once I’ve finished it…(hopefully this week, but things are very busy at work (and quite sucky) but otherwise next week for sure…..I’ll be writing yet another glowing review for you! It’s a no brainer really..so let’s see if we can push this one up those reader charts too!😂😂
In the meantime…congrats man: from the bottom of my heart: this is awesome!!!😀😀

    1. Admittedly, I am downplaying how high it had to go to get there, but again, that’s just my realistic side rearing it’s head. It did have to pass thousands of books to break that barrier, and yes, you helped me get it there. Like I said, I’ve got reviews from regular readers of yours, so do not undersell how much you helped. It was a huge boost, and I am beyond appreciative for the support.

As for Wonder Land, thank you. You’ve no idea how much i appreciate that as well. Got a review today that called the tone uneven. I think they expected it to be a comedy all the way through, and were unprepared for some of the dark turns the story took. That’s my own fault in a way. I’ve got an obsession with exploring duality and sometimes mix comedy with drama in that exploration. Well, you read War Witch. Lot of that kind of thing there.

Man. What a freaking great day. I’m gonna send you the biggest hug, my man.

      1. Haha😊 Well…I don’t know if I ever told you, but I’m a huge fan of Korean dramas. If there’s one thing that happens there: it’s unexpected turns. I’ve seen comedies turn into tragedies, and even darker things: so I love stuff like that! Some people you can simply never please I guess😊 Either way, as I said I’m nearing page 200 right now, so about half way through and so far this has been one heck of a ride. Can’t wait to find out what the hell is going on. And that party of characters?? Oh man…so good! 😂😂
Anyways….I’m glad to have been of some help (even though I think it’s nothing special and it’s simply what friends are for😊). I hope to be able to promote wonderland too as best I can, and make a good post for it😊
Well..have about 50 minutes left today and then I’m off to another Wonderland😉 Enjoy this day man! Talk to you soon! 😀😀

      2. And….I’ve finally been able to order the book for myself now as well! I checked this morning and it was finally able to order on the Dutch website that I usually order books from. The one downside? It said it has a seven week delivery time😔 Oh well…at least it’s on it’s way! 😀😀

  2. Just started reading…

For me, the beginning of a zombie saga is critical. It’s one of the reasons I so enjoyed High School of the Dead. Is the fall reasonable? Is the mix of characters right? What kind of zombies are we dealing with?

I’m only up to where they’ve just left their base of operations (I don’t want to give _anything_away!). So, you know I’m still early. But so far?

Yeah, that’s how you write a zombie apocalypse! So far, so great!

    1. Thank you. It’s kind of funny, actually. Years ago, my wife and I did a full zombie tour. All the old Romero movies, plus the remakes, even if they were terrible, Shaun of the Dead, High School of the Dead, and a bunch of others. The first episode of The Walking Dead had just come out, an we watched that too. Just a full on tour of zombies in film.

Bunny came right after that. I think it was all of that being in my head inspired me to explore it in my own way, and hopefully bring something new and interesting to the genre.

Mostly, though, I’m glad you’ve been enjoying it so far. That’s always the best thing to hope for.
