Wednesday Shorts: Code 8

Superheroes are all the rage these days, unless your a geek like me. They’ve always been the rage in that case. Just so happens the rest of the world is starting to catch up. Which is great, since it means we get more cool short films like this weeks offering.

Code 8 is set in ‘Lincoln City’ some time after superhumans began to appear. Naturally, the world didn’t react to them the way they do in the comic books. Instead, they’ve become the new underclass, relegated to slums, discriminated against, and struggling just to survive.

Code 8 follows Taylor as he tries to find work so he can support his family, which eventually leads him into a confrontation with the police. The social commentary is handled deftly, reminding us just how little it takes for a group of people to be labeled ‘other’.

It also stars Robbie Amell, Stephen Amell, and Sung Kang, so while you know the acting will be excellent, the production values and special effects are what really make this one a stand out. I’d go so far as to say this is one of those shorts that really does deserve to be given a lot more room to play as either a feature film, or a tv series.

Of course, that all may end up detracting from what makes so excellent in the first place. I’ll let you be the judge of that.
