Much as no list of anime music would be complete without Full Metal Alchemist, so too would would it be lacking without the masterpiece that is Cowboy Bebop. Not only is it a classic, it is one of the series that ushered in the anime boom of the late 90’s, granting it a special place in the hearts and minds of people all over the world as the series that made them fall in love with anime.
Which is hardly an understatement. Cowboy Bebop is consistently listed as the greatest anime of all time, not just in Japan, but pretty much all over the world. All of which begins with the unforgettable opening sequence, titled “Tank!”, by The Seatbelts.
Incorporating the sci fi, noir, and jazz themed elements of the show with such utter precision it’s a little mind blowing, the OP for Cowboy Bebop introduces us to the characters and world setting without ever once giving a single thing away about the series itself. Which is a pretty awesome thing all by itself, but with “Tank!” playing over it all, the 60’s inspired look of the opening becomes a timeless piece of art all unto itself.
Which is the thing about it that has always fascinated me. You never need to see the series itself to appreciate the art that the opening credits sequence really is.
Check it out.
